Appearance: Being of Asian and Caucasian descent, Aya displays features from both her Japanese mother and her American father, with her narrow eyes and facial structure in contrast to her blue eyes and platinum blonde hair (although it is possible that her hair is dyed; most likely it is naturally black as she does have dark highlights).

While on occasion she isn’t too timid to dress in anything fancy, Aya has a modest manner of attire. Mostly due to the fact that it’s not practical at all to enter the field in shorts, skirts, and dresses (unless circumstances catch her by surprise). For the most part she dresses fairly simple. Her casual attire consists of either black or white tee-shirts, and jeans. Depending on the weather, and in Manhattan it is usually fairly cold in the winter, she tends to dress in her leather or jean jacket.

Aya is attractive, though she never uses sexuality to an advantage. Instead she relies on her cocky personality when dealing with people. She is lean and lithe in figure, but not frail; she is fairly agile, and while she’s not exactly super strong enough to lift monoliths, she is by no means weak, either.

Another noteworthy trait is that Aya looks nothing like her age. While she is physically thirty-six, she still appears young since the day her mitochondria awakened at twenty-five. She looks as though she has not aged a day since, and could very well possibly be considered ageless due to her awakened genes.

Personality: While she doesn’t have any bang-bang-shoot-em-up philosophy and definitely not the type to shoot first and ask later, Aya acts pretty fast in a sticky situation. If given the opportunity, she would prefer talking down a perpetrator than exercise her trigger finger. However, that doesn’t mean she is completely docile, either, as she won’t hesitate to defend herself.

Though her time on the police force was short, she has a cop’s gut instinct, and she is fairly good about following it.

On her good side, it isn’t too strange for Aya to be gentle and sweet, almost maternal when it comes to children. She has a very motherly way of handling with kids, despite the fact that she’s never had any herself.

When on her bad side, on the other hand, Aya can be snappish, easily agitated when confused. In times like these she prefers to be alone, often pushing away those close to her so she can have some time to think. She isn’t the type to really talk about her feelings and her past, and can be pretty formal with authority figures. While respect for her superiors is there, mostly Aya just prefers to go and do her own thing, on her own way.

Most people don’t understand her, as Aya has a tendency to feel estranged from others. A freakshow, even went so far as to calling herself a monster once when fearing that she could become like Melissa, like Eve. At times she struggles with the realization that she may not be human, but something else entirely. What that something is she has yet to figure out.

Abilities: Practically losing her mitochondrial abilities altogether, Aya is forced to rely on firepower and wits alone. She is extremely experienced in weaponry, having used a vast variety of them over the years of dealing with enemies, both enemies and monsters alike. Being a quick thinker helps a lot, as well, as Aya is swift to act in a crisis.
She has excellent marksmanship, rarely known to ever miss a target, and she is quick and nimble on the field. Her combat has improved with experienced from having fought with inhuman foes. In terms of abilities, she is professional in terms of guns and temperament. When the situation gets rough, Aya is quick to take charge, keep cool, and not break down under stress.
Just about the only noticeable trace of her abilities left are her lack of aging (she’s 36 but looks like she’s still 25), which hasn’t gone away anytime soon.

Weaknesses: With her mitochondrial abilities gone, things are going to be much more difficult for Aya, but she’s a survivor. Still, she is a little too hotheaded at times, which could lead her into some trouble. She has a habit of being too outspoken and sarcastic, coming off as rude to others. Most of all, she is stubborn. While she expresses respect and obedience towards authority figures, Aya isn’t the type to always follow orders, and is known to go stray whenever she sees fit.
Due to her estranged abilities, Aya is a bit of a loner, going off on her own, relying very rarely if ever on others. She keeps to herself, not talking about her past very much with other people.
Because of Manhattan, her abilities have waned entirely, leaving Aya only with her knowledge and wits in combat. Though she never really preferred flaunting her abilities in front of others in the first place.

History: Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1972, Aya Brea had lived a pretty easygoing existence throughout her first five years, with a normal family of a mother and father, and a twin sister, Maya. Until a fateful December evening in 1977, proving to be the catalyst that would eventually haunt Aya twenty years later. Losing both her mother and sister in a car accident that night, and Aya herself barely survived with naught but risking her right eye—her sister, however, rescued her from blindness in a way. Maya had been an organ donor, whose cornea served to salvage Aya’s vision. Unknowingly, on that same night another girl had been given the same type of transplant: A young girl named Melissa Pierce, received Maya Brea’s kidney. What no one knew was that this action would serve to destroy many lives several years later.

Throughout his upbringing, Aya had been raised in New York by her father, a journalist. It was because of him that Aya, driven by her tomboyish and stubborn nature, strived to become a cop as well, even after he died of a heart attack much later down the line. Aya has only fond memories of her father, who raised her as a single parent with a strong set of morals and ethics. He was the only thing she had considered a family, with no other close relatives to turn to.

At age twenty-five, Aya was recruited to the NYPD of the 17th Precinct as a “rookie cop”, partnered up with Daniel Dollis (sometimes called “Bo” by his friends). They quickly became the father-daughter team of the precinct, as Daniel developed a fatherly type of protectiveness towards his partner. Thus far she had been on the good side of her colleagues, a tight-nit bunch.

While she was still pretty green in her years, Aya had a way of keeping calm under pressure, stubborn and resilient as always. Her resilience would be tested on Christmas Eve of 1997, where she attended an opera on a whim at the Carnegie Hall. The incident there would be only the beginning of a series of even more unfortunate events, leading into the deaths of many more when the singer somehow transformed and set afire staff and audience of the opera. The singer introduced herself as, not Melissa Pierce, but as Eve. Aya, being the sole survivor of this attack, took it upon herself to track Eve and bring an end to her devastation. This would only be the beginning of Aya’s struggle on the road to unveiling Melissa’s case and finding out that she and Melissa had an eerie connection to one another, linked by the same dead sister, Maya Brea.

As it turned out, Aya had a bond with Mitochondria Eve, said to be linked to the first woman in human existence. While Mitochondria Eve had been found to be a woman in Africa, the First Eve attacked a town in Japan, but before she could successfully carry out her plan, she had been destroyed.

The Second Eve’s attack, however, had been much more grandiose, leading into the massacre of the opera house, and many more in the New York Blockade Incident following the Carnegie Hall slaughter. With the help of Daniel and a scientist from Japan, Kunihiko Maeda, it became possible for Aya to successfully put a stop to Eve’s attempt in wiping out humankind. But when she thought that the downfall of Eve and her child, the Ultimate Being, would have been the end, the creatures that had been changed, forced by their mitochondria, began to migrate west of the country.

Subsequent to the battle with Eve and the Ultimate Being, an incident occurred in the Chrysler Tower some time before the events changed. It is possible that Aya lost most of her mitochondrial abilities, retaining only a weaker portion of the ones she already had. At first she believed that she had lost them altogether, regaining back at least some sense of normalcy, until as the years went on Aya began to notice that she was still capable of generating energy such as heat, and heal her own injuries at a much faster rate.

After the New York Blockade Incident, Aya resigned from the police force to hunt after the creatures left behind by Eve’s destruction. Eventually, she had gained the attention of MIST based in Los Angeles, a secret branch of the FBI unit banded together specifically to hunt after the remnants. These creatures, dubbed by MIST, were known as NMCs (Neo Mitochondrial Creatures). The investigation at the Akropolis Tower would only be the beginning of a series of more events. Once barely escaping the tower with her life along with her new partner, Rupert, Aya was sent on a new investigation in Nevada in the small desert town of Dryfield. The town had been practically derelict with but a few survivors, and wound up working together with a shady private investigator she met along the way, Kyle Madigan. Together, the two discover an entrance to an abandoned mine, leading to an underground shelter. Down there, Aya discovered that the ANMCs were a result of genetic experiments, using her own genes to create them.

What more, her genes had been used to create the clone of a young girl, forced into manipulating hostile NMCs. This girl was called Eve, created from Aya’s own DNA. As such, Aya took her on as a daughter, after rescuing her from the shelter with the help of Kyle Madigan, who sacrificed himself in order to ensure their escape.

Aya lost contact with Kyle, and moved back to New York with Eve. Things seemed to be going pretty well, spending the next eight years taking care and looking after Eve, who seemed to have lost all of her abilities as well. Aya, too, seemed to have reached some level of normalcy again in her life.

Until one day a monster named Clover hit Manhattan, and Aya was plunged into confusion. To make things worse, Eve is nowhere to be seen, and losing contact with the outside world proved to make the situation even less promising.
